Reflections On and about S M Vasagar

Growing up, I often heard my grandfather’s name spoken with reverence, not only within our family, but throughout the Ceylonese Tamil community in Singapore. To me, he was simply “Pethappa”: the man everyone turned to when they needed wisdom, comfort, or guidance.

Mr. S. M. Vasagar never sought recognition, yet his presence became woven into the lives of so many. He stood beside families in their moments of deepest sorrow, guided them through their happiest celebrations, and devoted himself wholeheartedly to preserving our faith, traditions, and community. His legacy lives on in the Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple, the Kalyanamandapam he envisioned, and in the countless lives he touched with quiet compassion. Some lives are measured by what they achieve. His was measured by the hearts that still remember him. Long after his voice has fallen silent, his example continues to guide us. A remarkable man, our community instinctively turned to whose shoes can never truly be filled.
