I still remember those early days when my late Mamma, Mahadevan Kanagasabai, whom we affectionately called Appu Mamma, undertook the remarkable journey from Malaysia to Jaffna in search of the woman who would become his life partner, my late Mammi, Yogammah Ponnusamy, our beloved Appu Mammi. I was only a young boy then, still in my late single digit years, quietly observing the world with innocent curiosity.
Having been born and raised in Malaysia, I recall how unfamiliar it initially felt to hear Mammi speak in the rich, lilting tones of Jaffna Tamil. To my young ears, it sounded different, almost foreign. Yet, as the days turned into years, what remained with me was never that difference, but the depth of her warmth. Her love was constant, her care unwavering, and her gentle strength quietly filled every space she entered. Even as a child, I came to understand that my uncle’s journey to find her was not only meaningful, it was destined, and worth every sacrifice.
Mammi was truly an extraordinary woman. Some of my most cherished childhood memories were shaped in the simple moments spent with Appu Mamma and Mammi while they lived in the Malaysian Air Force quarters. There was nothing extravagant about those days, yet they were filled with laughter, affection, and a deep sense of belonging that only a loving home can provide.
What always stood out was her resilience. She arrived in Malaysia knowing only Tamil, yet with quiet determination and remarkable intelligence, she embraced an entirely new world. In time, she learned to speak both English and Bahasa Malaysia, not as a burden, but as a bridge to connect, to belong, and to give more of herself to those around her. She never saw limitations as barriers; instead, she rose above them with grace and dignity.
Beyond all her strengths, it was her heart that defined her. Mammi’s kindness was effortless, her generosity boundless, and her presence deeply comforting. She possessed the rare gift of making everyone feel seen, valued, and at home. She did not merely build a household; she created a sanctuary of love, where family was nurtured and bonds were strengthened.
Today, as I reflect on their lives, I remember not only the woman she was, but also the beautiful love story she shared with Appu Mamma, a story of courage, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion. Their journey together stands as a testament to what love truly means.
Though Mammi is no longer with us, her legacy endures in the values she instilled, the lives she touched, and the love she gave so freely. In our hearts, she will always remain our beloved Appu Mammi.
